Gwên Language Immersion Center
Gwên Language Immersion Center (Secondary)
‘Mae gwên yr un peth ymhob iaith’
We are very fortunate as a school that Carmarthenshire Council has established a Language Immersion Center, Canolfan Gwên, on the campus of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Maes y Gwendraeth. The aim of Canolfan Gwên for secondary pupils, is to develop pupils' linguistic ability in Welsh so that they can;
- communicate clearly day to day with their friends, peers and teachers
- foster a good understanding within their lessons in order to undertake tasks and activities successfully
- help develop their literacy skills in order to make good progress within their lessons
At the moment, weekly sessions are organised for small groups of Year 7 pupils in order to receive additional support in the Welsh language. In addition, late incomers from primary schools in the school's catchment area attend Canolfan Gwên three days a week in order to have Welsh immersion lessons.
What are the benefits of Immersion Education?
Research shows that pupils who experience immersion education;
- excel academically
- can learn a third and fourth language more easily
- understand and embrace other cultures
- have a better awareness of identity, culture and feeling of society
- develop better self esteem
- develop better communication and social skills
