Head Prefects 2025-26

My name is Deio and I am one of the Head Prefects of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Maes y Gwendraeth. I am studying Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and the Welsh Baccalaureate for my Advanced Levels, all through the medium of Welsh. In my free time, I like to play rugby, football, go to the gym, play the piano and drums, and hang out with friends. I applied for the role of Head Prefect because I was keen to contribute positively to the life of the school. Since starting at this school, I have had great experiences, support and an excellent education that have helped me develop into a confident and independent individual. I am keen to support others to do the same. During my time as Head Prefect, I am keen to discuss ideas on how to further develop the sixth form and Y Gilfach with my fellow students, develop opportunities to socialise and keep healthy, and ensure that the pupils' voice is heard across the school. It is a privilege to be chosen to be Head Prefect and I am looking forward to working together with everyone over the next year.

I am studying History, Politics and Drama as A level subjects. I have several skills and qualities that are essential for this important responsibility. I am an active and organised person when doing my schoolwork and I try to prioritise these qualities outside of school as well. I work well as part of a team and feel that I am at my best when working with others. I am a creative person and interested in the world of fashion and films. This is very important to me as a person. The Gilfach, although a comfortable place, is a bit boring! I would like the Sixth Form to be able to plan and paint a mural that would clearly show our values, namely: Meithrin - Blaguro - Llwyddo. This will create a welcoming and attractive atmosphere for the students. In addition, there are empty display boards in the Gilfach. The sixth form could display their successes throughout the year on these. Because of my role in the Health and Wellbeing Forum mental health is very important to me. I would like to see various guest speakers come and talk to the Sixth Form about specific elements of health and well-being so that we develop our understanding and the ability to understand and help others. I chose to stay in the Sixth Form because I was able to choose subjects that interest me. I thoroughly enjoy studying History, Politics and Drama as A level subjects. In addition, there are plenty of creative extracurricular activities through the medium of Welsh. I look forward to taking advantage of all the different opportunities available to the Sixth Form here in Maes y Gwendraeth.

Without a doubt, I have the qualities to be able to take on the role of a Head Prefect. I am a very friendly individual who is confident to talk to anyone, which is key to a Head Prefect as the role requires you to be confident in front of any audience from year 7 pupils to teachers and governors. Another skill I have is enthusiasm to devote myself to the school community as I am extremely proud to be called a pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Maes Y Gwendraeth. With the sixth form, in particular, there is a positive, family feeling. I feel incredibly lucky to be able to share this with the school's younger pupils and perhaps inspire some to continue their journey with us here. In terms of hopes for the year, I would like to create more of a relationship between year 12 and year 11 who may be unsure if they want to come back to our sixth form or not. I am keen to share my positive experience and to show others that everyone can blossom as a young person as well as develop life skills, make friends for life through socialising and have the opportunity to do all this through the Welsh language. I am also keen to improve the Welsh ethos of the school by emphasising the positive influence our sixth form students on the school's younger pupils.

My name is Elen Thomas, and I am one of the Head Prefects at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Maes y Gwendraeth. For my Advanced Levels, I am studying Welsh, Religious Studies, History and the Welsh Baccalaureate. Without a doubt, I want to see the school's sixth form develop further in the school, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to be the school's Head Prefect. The role of Head Prefect is an essential part of the school, and a great tradition that helps students understand skills as leaders and develop the skill of working collaboratively, which is a great help for our future careers. Being a Head Prefect is more than a title, these are the school's ambassadors who set an example and drive important principles. I'm a person who enjoys being with others: working together, co-organising and co-leading and I've experienced this through the special opportunities I've had at school. I am a natural, confident communicator and can positively influence others. I am organised and careful and therefore able to maintain a balance between schoolwork and the work of a Head Prefect. As one of the Head Prefects of the school, I would like to see the sixth form play greater role by demonstrating to prospective parents the Welsh values we have developed throughout our journey at school. In addition to this, I am keen that the Head Prefects attend transition sessions and lead important workshops from reading to sports and all in Welsh. In addition, I would like to see us extend the role of the buddy scheme, with the Head Prefects going into weekly registration sessions to read a class novel with year 7. It is a simple way of ensuring that children read and relax without feeling compelled to read.

My name is Hawis Thomas and I have the privilege of being one of this year’s Head Prefects. I have chosen to study Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and the Welsh Baccalaureate, making the important decision to study Chemistry and Biology through the medium of Welsh. Throughout my five years at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Maes y Gwendraeth, I have become aware of the strong community that the school has. As I begin my last two years of education, I have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the school that will not only benefit me, but also my peers. Throughout my education at school, I have had the privilege of having teachers who are unfailingly generous, dedicated, passionate and compassionate to guide me through my years at school. I have also come to know worthwhile friends and fellow students who have shared this privilege, who have also been such an important part of not only my education, but also my time at school. Being Head Prefect allows me to give back to those who have given to me over the years. The role of Head Prefect requires someone who shows great commitment to the school environment and shows confidence in being the school's main pupil representative. I show a great willingness to want to offer my service to the school in any aspect of work that needs to be done with my initiative, the ability to work in a team and as a competent leader and I am ready to contribute positively to our sixth form. In terms of specific responsibilities, my interest lies within the role of teaching the school's younger children about the importance of Welsh. As a fluent Welsh speaker, I strongly believe in keeping the language alive and I am prepared to promote the language in any way possible throughout the school and in the wider community.
